Workshop on Reproducible Research in Pattern Recognition

Presentation

Following the success of the five first editions, we are proud to present the 6th edition of the ICPR workshop Reproducible Research in Pattern Recognition (RRPR).

RRPR 2026 is intended as both a short participative course on the Reproducible Research (RR) aspects, leading to open discussions with the participants, and also as a practical workshop on how to actually perform RR. In addition, another key goal for gathering the research community is to further advance the scientific aspects of reproducibility in pattern recognition research.

This workshop is of interest for all ICPR participants and attendees since it allows to handle various topics not restricted to one specific fields. The reproducibility is an important topics in general and particularly good for PhD students and young researchers to learn "good habits".

The workshop is on-site and we will study the possibility of allowing online presentations.

Note: RRPR 2026 will publish its own separate post-proceedings, distinct from the ICPR 2026 proceedings.

Keynote lecture: Reproducibility Challenges: A Focus on Computational Reproducibility with Examples from the Medical Imaging Research Community
Sorina Camarasu-Pop

Biography
Sorina Camarasu-Pop received the Engineering degree in Telecommunications in 2007 and the Ph.D degree (on exploiting heterogeneous distributed systems for Monte-Carlo simulations in the medical field) in 2013, both from the National Institute for Applied Sciences of Lyon (INSA-Lyon, France). Since 2007 she's a CNRS research engineer at the Creatis laboratory in Lyon, France, where she is currently in charge of the VIP platform, which counts more than 1000 registered users. Her activity is focused on optimizing the execution of medical image processing applications on heterogeneous distributed systems. In the last few years, she has been particularly interested in enhancing open and reproducible science through my VIP activities, but also through other projects such as the EU OpenAIRE-Connect, EGI-ACE and EUCAIM projects and the France Life Imaging (FLI) platform, where Ishe is also member of the steering committee of the Information Analysis and Management node. In March 2021, she received the CNRS Médaille de Cristal for having contributed to the excellence of French research. From 2022 to 2024 I was the coordinator of the French ANR ReproVIP (ANR-21-CE45-0024-01) project.

Abstract
This talk begins with a brief overview of the definitions and key concepts of reproducibility, including its multiple layers — from methodological to computational considerations. It then focuses on computational reproducibility, illustrated through studies conducted within the ReproVIP project. Challenges in this area primarily stem from software variability, library dependencies and their evolution over time, as well as numerical instability due to floating-point arithmetic issues (e.g., rounding errors, hardware and compiler optimizations). The talk will show how software, numerical, and hardware variabilities affect linear registration results produced by a neuroimaging application packaged with Docker and Guix (a study presented at ACM REP’24). The presentation concludes with a broader perspective on reproducibility and open questions about addressing its persistent challenges.

Keynote lecture: Reproducible computational environment: Archiving and beyond
Simon Tournier

Biography
Simon Tournier is a permanent research engineer at Université de Paris Cité working at the Core Facilities of the Saint Louis Research Institute. His day job deals with supporting various aspects of scientific computing about biological data. Nowadays, he's mostly focused on reproducible computations using GNU Guix and data analyses about high-dimensional flow cytometry materials, as well as testing long-range nanopore sequencing with HLA samples. From 2012 to 2014, he was post-doc in the Applied and Computational Electromagnetics research group in Liège (Belgium) and then from 2014 to 2016 in Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, both working on various topics of numerical analysis.

Abstract
Today, software is a pillar of scientific production, either as a simple tool for analysing data, either as a companion research artifact for implementing dedicated analysis, either as the outcome itself by developing algorithmic methods or by investigating numerical processing. The ability to verify research results and to experiment with methodologies are core tenets of science. As software plays a central role in research results, it raises two first challenges: the identification of source code and its preservation on the long term. Source code needs to be archived (and identified). This talk will speak about Software Heritage: the largest publicly available archive of software source code. Beyond source code, computers execute binary code and the talk will open a discussion about a third challenge: how such computational environment (a.k.a package managers) needs to also be identified and preserved.
